Synchronized Skating in Fort Collins

The Ice Skating Club of Fort Collins is the home for several Synchronized Ice Skating Teams: The Fire Crystals, an Adult Team, and the Colorado State University (CSU) Team.

In an effort to improve the synchronized skating program and to encourage more participation, we are making some changes to the program for the 2010-2011 year:

  • A shorter season
  • More involvement of coaching staff to bring their strengths to the team--guest coaches on a monthly basis
  • Formation of a Competitive Team (national-eligible)
  • Higher standards
  • Continued fundraising to defray costs
Tryouts for Synchronized Skating Teams will be held on June 15, 2010 and June 22, 2010.

USFS dictates the requirements for synchronized skating including age (as of July 1, 2010) and moves in the field requirements for the different teams. MIF tests must be passed by late Fall 2010 to be eligible to compete.

This year we would like to have a developmental team and a national eligible team(s) [Novice and/or Juvenile].

The requirements for these teams are as follows:

  • Developmental: 18 and under, Pre-pre MIF or higher, depending on level*
  • Juvenile: Age 12 and under with at least Preliminary MIF and preferably PreJuvenile
  • Novice: Age 17 and under with Juvenile MIF and preferably Intermediate MIF
To have a successful competitive season, we need a full team of qualified skaters. Please consider trying out for a team this year. It is a lot of fun and a great way to work towards a goal with your friends!

Tuesday, June 15, 2010 and June 22, 2010 (Times below are for each date)
Two dates are provided to account for vacations. it is preferred skaters come to both sessions. If a skater is not available for either date, individual assessments can be arranged. Skaters may come to more than one tryout time if they are eligible.

5:00 - 5:45 pm -- Developmental Team tryouts
5:45 - 6:30 pm -- Juvenile Team tryouts
6:30 - 7:15 pm -- Novice Team tryouts

There will be a parent informational meeting on June 22, 2010 at 7:30 pm. If you have any questions prior to this time, please contact Pam Kurtz 970-396-1335, pkurtz2006@hotmail.com or Dana 970-481-3347 dana@theparlour.net or Denaysa sisemoredk@q.com.

If you know you will be attending tryouts, please send an email to Pam.

*There will also be a team that will be for introductory students to synchro that will be run through the Learn to Skate program.

WANTED: SYNCHRONIZED SKATERS!

For more information, contact coach Pam at EPIC: pkurtz2006@hotmail.com

What is Synchronized Skating?

Synchronized skating is a team sport in which 8 - 20 skaters perform a program together.  It is judged using the same system as singles, pairs and dance.  It is characterized by teamwork, speed, intricate formations and challenging step sequences.  Some of the elements in synchronized skating include blocks, circles, wheels, lines, intersections, moves in the field, moves in isolation, no-hold blocks, spins and pairs moves.

Teams compete in 15 different levels from the Beginner level up to Senior.  Click here for a USFSA Synchronized Skating Team Definition list.

There are many benefits to participating in a team sport, and synchronized skating is a great way for figure skaters to compete in a sport they love while enjoying all of the aspects of working with others in a team-oriented sport.

Fire Crystal Kudos

The Pre-juvenile and Open Juvenile teams traveled to Ann Arbor, Michigan (the home of synchronized skating) in early December for the Porter Synchronized Skating Classic. What fun it was to meet teams from all over the U.S. and Canada, too!

A big THANK YOU to our Fire Crystals sponsors  for helping make our travel possible.

All our teams did well at the 2009 Pacific Coast Sectional Championships in Broomfield, Colorado. We are very proud of all of our teams for their hard work and for a very successful season.

Our teams skated at a number of exhibitions during the year and performed in the Winter Wishes Ice Show in Fort Collins. And watch for us at more competitions in April!
